The Story
The tradition of the "sundowner" originated in South Africa during British colonial rule, consumed daily at the transition from day to evening. The drink of choice at the time is what we now consider a gin & tonic. In the early 18th century, it was discovered that quinine, an extract from the cinchona tree in South America, could be distilled into a tonic water, and could also be effective in the prevention and treatment of malaria. This discovery led to the widespread use of tonic water in British colonization, and the sundowner was born out of a "gin & tonic a day keeps malaria away" type mentality. Over the years, sundowner culture has evolved into more of a social context, sharing a drink to mark and celebrate the end of the workday, and the transition to a restful evening. We carry the latter mentality with this coffee and invite you to share and enjoy a Sundowner Decaf wherever you are, all hours of the day.
